Interview

How did you first become involved with the NSCAA?
I was named an NSCAA All-America at Mary Washington College in 1997.

Why do you continue to stay involved with the NSCAA?
I love the camaraderie of the coaching staff and the positive interaction between the coaching staff and the candidates.

Why do you like teaching NSCAA courses?
I love spreading my love of the game and knowledge with candidates. I also love that I learn a lot from the candidates.

What is your favorite NSCAA course to teach and why?
National (the only one I have taught) because there is such a variety of candidates with different coaching backgrounds, levels of coaching, etc.

What is the best thing about the NSCAA Academy?
The people I have met and worked with - they made me feel very welcome and were very supportive.

Who is your all-time favorite player?
Michelle Akers - US Women's National Team - She was a fearless leader even when no one knew who she was. She also didn't let her disease keep her down. She played her hardest even though she knew she wouldn't be able to move after each game.

Who are/were your mentors in soccer?
My dad, John Smith, who I run a soccer business with. My college soccer coach, Kurt Glaser.

Who are your mentors in the coaching profession?
Same as above.

What advice would you give to young coaches?
Keep learning as much as you can through courses and interacting with other coaches, not just through books and videos.

What is your favorite book and why?
The Power of One

What is your favorite movie and why?
Thomas Crown Affair

What is the last book you read?
Beckham

If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
Fighter pilot
